Progress on Barcelona Pavilion - Applying Materials

Material Properties

Concrete

What is the process of making the material:
 - The cement is prepared then other ingredients are prepared to be mixed together such as aggregates and admixtures. The result mixed together forms concrete.
How long will the material last:
- Concrete lasting period depends on its environmental, service, and maintenance conditions but on average it will last around 50-75 years.
What makes the material corrode:
- Various actions towards its surrounding environment such as rain and gases.
What are the material's structural pros and cons:
- PROS - Strong in compression, easily cast, recyclable, good strength properties.
- CONS - Weak in tension, can often crack and fail in situations.
What is the material typically used for:
- Footings, columns, walls, foundation of the building.
What are the material's environmental impacts:
- Creating concrete and emit amount of Carbon dioxide contributing to the greenhouse effect.
- Concrete dust from the demolition of buildings causing air pollution.

Glass

What is the process of making the material:
- The first step is the input of the raw materials, then it undergoes a varied process within the furnace, and the last step is the output production.
How long will the material last:What makes the material corrode:
- Glass doesn't decompose.
What are the material's structural pros and cons:
- PROS - Can be cast into many shapes and provides transparency.
- CONS - Very brittle.
What is the material typically used for:
- Windows
What are the material's environmental impacts:
- With the use of heat to produce glass, it emits Carbon dioxide and contributes to the greenhouse effect.

Marble

What is the process of making the material:
- The mined materials of marble are fed into the furnace to be refined and then is shaped through the processes of injection, cutting and cooling.
How long will the material last:What makes the material corrode:
- 3-4 centuries.
What are the material's structural pros and cons:
- PROS - Aesthetic appearance, durable.
- CONS - Low resistance to scratching and expensive.
What is the material typically used for:
- Statues, buildings, tomb stones, fireplace mantles, floor tiles, and countertops.
What are the material's environmental impacts:
- Energy consumption of marble factories uses an electric source minimalising the environmental impact from energy consumption sources.

Description of the selected houses - Decided to do the Barcelona Pavilion

The Barcelona Pavilion designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe is known for its simple form and its choice of materials that expresses a simple and constant form. Its supported by thin columns showing features of minimalism.

The Rudin House by Herzog & de Meuron evokes a typical image of a house. Its external appearance has all the features of a common home; i.e. roof, door, windows and walls.

The House at Bordeaux by Rem Koolhaas is a house that is based around technology. This moving and simple yet complex building was built for a paralysed client.

Final Video of my Island

Developed Island Environment

Strategy Statement

To show my revealing and concealing of my letter, number combination, I intend to first take shots around the perimeters of my island to show its scale. I will then proceed to explore distinct aspects of my island, such as narrow areas, water, areas which has an entity nearby it and following along geometry that is part of my letter, number combination (e.g. following a cliff side). After exploring the distinct features of the island, I will then zoom out from above for a bird's eye view, which then will reveal my letter and number combination.
